Pioneering Filtration Science: Airmid Research Showcased at IEQ 2025

Filtration Science to Be Showcased at IEQ 2025 in Montreal

IEQ 2025 Conference in Montreal where Airmid Healthgroup presented filtration science research on train air systems.
The IEQ 2025 Conference in Montreal will bring together experts to share innovations in indoor environmental quality including Airmids filtration science research

At the IEQ 2025 Conference in Montreal (September 24–26, 2025), leading voices in indoor environmental quality are sharing filtration science and solutions to create healthier indoor spaces. Among the highlights is a research poster presented by Dr. John McKeon, Principal of the iAIR Institute, showcasing work conducted by the expert scientific team at Airmid Healthgroup.

Poster Presentation: Filtration Testing in Real-World Conditions

Poster presentation on filtration science at IEQ 2025 in Montreal, led by Airmid Healthgroup researchers and presented by Dr. John McKeon.
Airmid to showcase filtration science research at IEQ 2025

On Thursday, September 25, 2025 (2:00–3:30pm EDT) during Poster Session 2, Dr. McKeon will present:

“Bespoke Testing of Filtration Systems to Ensure Air Quality in Trains.”

The study, led by Airmid scientists including Dr. John Ryan, Dr. Angela Southey, Josh Ryan, Aaron Robinson, Oliver Dsa, and Himangi Das, evaluates how filtration systems perform under simulated real-world train conditions.

Using Airmid’s state-of-the-art environmental test chambers, the research compared:

  • A MERV-13 filter with proprietary antimicrobial coating
  • A MERV-16 benchmark filter

By testing both bacterial (Staphylococcus epidermidis) and viral (Influenza A H1N1) challenges in recirculation and single-pass duct systems, the study provided a detailed picture of how filters perform when put under conditions that mimic everyday passenger transport.

Filtration Science: Key Findings

🔹 The antimicrobial-coated MERV-13 filter outperformed the MERV-16 filter in the simulated train environment.
🔹 Bespoke testing revealed performance differences that may not be evident from standard laboratory methods alone.
🔹 Results reinforce the importance of testing filters in conditions that reflect how they are actually used, not just in controlled benchmarks.

This research illustrates how Airmid’s custom-built test methodologies deliver deeper insights into filtration performance, ensuring that solutions can be evaluated for both compliance and real-world impact.

Why It Matters

Public transport is one of the most challenging environments for managing indoor air quality. High passenger density and limited ventilation create conditions where airborne transmission risks are elevated. By validating filters under true-to-life conditions, Airmid’s research helps:

  • Manufacturers develop products that meet the demands of transport environments.
  • Standards bodies and policymakers understand the health outcomes of filtration choices.
  • Passengers benefit from improved comfort and protection against airborne threats.

Dr. John McKeon’s Contribution to the ASHRAE IEQ Workshop

In addition to presenting the poster, Dr. John McKeon will also speak at the ASHRAE Special Workshop “Toward an ASHRAE Standard on IEQ.” His presentation, “Health Outcomes and Metrics: A Physician’s Perspective on IEQ,” will examine how indoor environmental quality metrics connect to measurable health outcomes. By addressing links between environmental data, public health, and performance, his talk will complement Airmid’s applied research, demonstrating the shared goal of translating science into healthier indoor environments.
