
Healthcare facilities face a unique challenge when it comes to indoor air: the air itself can be a vector for infection, and the consequences of poor filtration can be catastrophic.
On September 1st, 2026, the World Filtration Institute (WFI) will bring together a panel of international experts to tackle exactly that challenge in a live online course, Air Filtration for Hospitals. Airmid’s Medical Director Dr. John McKeon will be among the panelists, bringing a perspective drawn from hospital air quality testing and clinical practice.

What the Course Covers
The session is built for anyone responsible for indoor air quality, infection control, or facilities management in a healthcare setting. Over two hours, instructors Mark Davidson (Camfil Americas) and Stephen Nicholas (past president, National Air Filtration Association) will walk through the practical fundamentals of hospital air filtration and hospital air quality testing, including:
- How airborne contaminants move through healthcare facilities, and why hospital environments demand a different filtration standard than typical commercial buildings
- Key standards and guidelines, including ASHRAE 170, MERV and HEPA efficiency ratings, and requirements for critical spaces such as operating rooms, isolation rooms, and pharmacies
- Filtration technologies in use today, from prefilters and HEPA/ULPA systems to gas-phase filtration and portable air cleaners
- Practical guidance on filter selection, system design, installation quality, and total cost of ownership
- In-situ testing, performance verification, and troubleshooting lessons drawn directly from hospital applications
The course closes with a panel discussion on emerging developments and trends in healthcare air quality.
Dr. McKeon on the Panel
As Medical Director at Airmid and CEO of the iAIR Group, Dr. McKeon brings a perspective that few others on the panel can: he trained and practiced as an Emergency Room doctor before turning his focus to how the built environment shapes respiratory and allergic health. That “upstream” view (treating hospital air quality testing and prevention as inseparable from patient care) has shaped his work ever since, from founding Allergy Standards to building the iAIR Institute’s research into aerobiology and indoor air.
He’ll be joined on the panel by a strong lineup of fellow IAQ specialists, including Dr. Stephanie Taylor (ThinkLite, WFI Advisory Board), Nick Agopian (Reviveaire), Dr. Mehdi Shirmohammadi (Termeh Filtration), and Dr. Christine Sun, President of the World Filtration Institute. This is a genuinely global cross-section of clinical, engineering, and filtration expertise all focused on the same question: how do we make hospital air safer?
How Airmid Approaches Hospital Air Quality Testing
Hospital air quality testing forms a core part of Airmid’s own work. Through its aerobiology labs, Airmid evaluates how airborne pathogens, bioaerosols, and antimicrobial surfaces behave in real-world healthcare conditions, the same variables the WFI course addresses from a filtration-design perspective. Pairing that lab-based evidence with field expertise like Dr. McKeon’s is how filtration standards move from theory into practice.
