Indoor Air 2026 wrapped up this week in Singapore, and it was exactly the kind of global gathering that moves this field forward. Over four days, more than 860 papers were presented by researchers from 47 countries, covering the full breadth of indoor air quality science, from allergen exposure to pathogen transmission, ventilation strategy, and the built environment’s role in human health.
Airmid Healthgroup CEO Dr. John Ryan was on the ground all week, connecting with researchers, engineers, and policymakers from the USA, Europe, ASEAN, and Oceania. As Dr. Ryan put it: “Indoor Air 2026 facilitates a global discussion on the latest research on all things indoor air quality.” It was a week of rich conversations, familiar faces, and new ideas, with colleagues including Lidia Morawska, Chandra Sekhar, Randall Cooper, Kimberly Wieland, Mark Hernandez, William McQuade, James McGrath, and Simon Jones all in attendance.

New Research: HVAC Duct Cleaning Testing in Partnership with NADCA
One of the highlights of the week for the Airmid team was Dr. Ryan’s presentation of new research on HVAC duct cleaning testing conducted in partnership with the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). The study investigated the effect of professional HVAC duct cleaning and maintenance on particulate matter, bacteria, mould, and allergens.
HVAC systems are central to indoor air distribution, yet ducts can accumulate contaminants over time. This research examined whether professional cleaning and maintenance produces measurable, real-world improvements across these categories. The response from attendees was encouraging, and we look forward to sharing more on the findings in the coming weeks.

The Defining Theme of the Week
Across sessions, one thread cut through consistently: the continuing need to prevent the ingress, circulation, and spread of pathogens and infectious agents in the spaces where people work, sleep, eat, and congregate. Prevention is the priority, but effective treatments and technologies to support those efforts are equally critical.
It is a theme that sits at the heart of Airmid’s work, and it was rewarding to see it reflected so clearly in the scientific programme in Singapore.
Looking Ahead
Dr. John McKeon will be taking this thematic area to the ASHRAE Annual Conference, exploring what the science means for how we design, operate, and certify the spaces around us. We look forward to the discussion continuing there.
