Exploring Design Strategies for Controlled Environments: A Review of the ASHRAE Ireland Chapter Meeting
Last week, Airmid Healthgroup had the distinct honor of hosting the ASHRAE Ireland chapter meeting at our Citywest facilities in Dublin. The event featured an engaging session as part of the ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturers Program, showcasing innovative approaches to controlled environments—a topic of paramount importance in today’s health and safety landscape.
The Distinguished Lecture Series
Dr. John McKeon, Medical Director of Airmid Healthgroup, was invited to deliver the opening discussion at the gathering, setting the tone for the meeting. The ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturers Program, established in the 1996-97 society year, aims to provide local chapters with exceptional speakers addressing topics pertinent to ASHRAE members and their guests. This program encourages collaboration and knowledge-sharing among chapters, universities, and organizations, making cutting-edge insights readily accessible.
A Convergence of Expertise at the ASHRAE Ireland Meeting
The meeting featured three distinguished guest speakers from the United States:
- Don Colliver, PE (University of Kentucky)
- Vincent Sakraida (Vice President, WSP USA)
- Wei Sun, PE, FASHRAE (President, Engysysco LLC)
Under the expert chairmanship of Howard Neville, Mechanical Department Manager at Arcadis, the seminar titled “Design Strategies for Controlled Environments” explored the subject of optimization of controlled environments across various sectors, and included the subjects of energy efficiency and carbon emissions.

Key Insights from Our Speakers
Don Colliver has dedicated over 40 years to advancing energy efficiency in buildings. As a Professor in the Biosystems Engineering Department and former Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Kentucky, his expertise in energy management was evident as he highlighted the relationship between energy usage, carbon footprints, and the importance of sustainable practices.
Vincent Sakraida, with four decades of experience in mechanical and HVAC system design for controlled environments, echoed similar sentiments. His extensive background includes leadership roles within ASHRAE, where he currently serves as Vice Chairman of the TC9.11 Clean Space Committee. His focus on energy efficiency and carbon impact highlighted the essential need for innovative solutions in HVAC design.
Wei Sun, an ASHRAE Fellow and distinguished service awardee, brought a wealth of knowledge to the discussion. His leadership in multiple ASHRAE technical committees—ranging from Clean Spaces to Healthcare Facilities—reinforced the importance of controlled environments in sectors such as healthcare, laboratories, and microchip manufacturing. His insights into clean rooms and their specific design requirements resonated deeply with attendees, emphasizing the necessity of tailored approaches to meet diverse needs.
The Importance of Controlled Environments
As we navigate through public health challenges, the need for rigorous air quality management and contamination control becomes paramount. The discussions highlighted the diverse requirements across various scenarios, from aerosol pathogen containment for infectious patients to the meticulous conditions needed for immunocompromised individuals.
The session resonated strongly with Airmid attendees, describing the complexities of designing environments that safeguard health while optimizing functionality. The need for specialized strategies in facilities such as hospitals, surgical theaters, and laboratories illustrated the critical role that HVAC and environmental controls play in public health.
A Concluding Tour and Q&A Session
The meeting concluded with an interactive tour of Airmid’s state-of-the-art facilities, allowing participants to see firsthand the application of the strategies discussed. This was followed by a lively Q&A session that encouraged knowledge exchange among the professionals.
We extend our gratitude to the event sponsors, to Howard Neville for his accomplished moderation and to Conor Murray for facilitating this ASHRAE Ireland meeting. The collaborative spirit of the ASHRAE Ireland chapter meeting reflected our commitment to advancing the conversation around controlled environments and their impact on health and safety.
As we look forward to future engagements, Airmid Healthgroup remains dedicated to innovation and collaboration within the HVAC and health sectors, ensuring that we continue to meet the challenges of tomorrow with knowledge and expertise.
