
Airmid Healthgroup’s air cleaner technology testing is taking centre stage at the 2026 ASHRAE Summer Conference in Austin this week, with Dr. John McKeon presenting new research conducted in Airmid’s specialist 28.5m³ environmental chamber. The study examines the nanoparticle removal efficiency of a novel air purification system, addressing growing public health concern around indoor exposure to nanoparticles from outdoor pollution sources including wildfires, industrial emissions and tire wear.
Air Cleaner Technology Testing: Nanoparticle Removal Efficiency Study AU-26-C077
Dr. John McKeon is presenting new research at ASHRAE 2026 conducted using Airmid Healthgroup’s specialist environmental chamber facilities. The study (AU-26-C077), presented on Sunday, June 28, evaluates the filtration performance of a novel air purification system incorporating proprietary technology with dedicated airflow specifically targeting airborne nanoparticles.
The research addresses a growing public health concern: the contribution of outdoor pollution sources, including wildfires, industrial emissions and tire wear, to indoor nanoparticle exposure. These sources generate carbonaceous nanoparticles, microplastics and PM2.5, as well as particulate matter and volatile organic compounds, all of which can infiltrate indoor environments with potential impacts on occupant health.

Testing was conducted in a controlled 28.5m³ environmental chamber, with nanoparticles of average dimensions 10-20nm width and 2-3µm length aerosolised into the chamber. Particle counts were monitored across a 60-minute test duration, and gravimetric sampling was used to assess particle mass reduction. Performance was compared against natural decay with the proprietary technology switched off.
The system achieved a 92.5% reduction in airborne nanoparticles within 60 minutes. Gravimetric analysis showed a 63.6% reduction in particle mass after 30 minutes. Further testing is planned to assess performance against carbonaceous nanoparticles and volatile organic compounds, and to monitor potential byproducts during device operation.

ASHRAE Standards and Committee Activity
Beyond the research presentation, Dr. McKeon is participating in a series of ASHRAE committee and technical working group meetings, including the Environmental Health Committee, the Center of Excellence for Indoor Environmental Quality, reactive air and surface technologies, UV-related technical discussions, and air-cleaner standards development. These forums directly inform the standards landscape within which Airmid’s testing programmes operate. Dr. McKeon also takes up the position of President-Elect of the ASHRAE Ireland Chapter on 1 July 2026.
