As Europe’s leading public health conference returns, Airmid Healthgroup would like to acknowledge the ongoing importance of ESCAIDE, the European Scientific Conference on Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology. Organised annually by the ECDC, ESCAIDE brings together epidemiologists, microbiologists, communicators, social scientists, policymakers, and more — all united around the goal of reducing disease burden and improving indoor air quality.
This year’s ESCAIDE (19–21 November 2025, in Warsaw and online) promises to centre on some particularly resonant themes for Airmid Healthgroup: One Health, health equity, evidence-to-policy translation, and the environmental drivers of infectious disease.
Why ESCAIDE Matters to Airmid Healthgroup
- Intersection of Infectious Disease and Indoor Environments
While ESCAIDE is often thought of in the context of community-level infectious disease epidemiology, many of the vectors and risk drivers are rooted in environmental and built-environment contexts. At Airmid, our scientific mission involves understanding bioaerosols — airborne bacteria, viruses, fungal spores, allergens — in indoor spaces, because these microscopic particles directly influence transmission risk, respiratory health, and overall well-being. - One Health Approach
One of ESCAIDE’s plenary themes for 2025 is One Health, emphasising how human, animal, and environmental health are intertwined. We fully endorse this vision. Indoor air is not isolated: it is influenced by outdoor ecology, human behavior, building design, ventilation, and microbial ecosystems. Our controlled environmental chambers allow us to simulate real-world indoor conditions, helping to better understand how microbial and viral agents persist or disperse, and inform strategies for ventilation, disinfection, and design that mitigate risk. - From Evidence to Action
Another core theme of ESCAIDE 2025 is turning “evidence into policy and practice.” Airmid Healthgroup sits squarely in that space: we don’t just measure; we validate, we advise, and we support manufacturers and public health bodies in making decisions that affect the air people breathe indoors. Our ISO-accredited laboratory and environmental test chambers give stakeholders data they can trust — data that can feed directly into public health guidelines, building standards, and product design. - Health Equity
Health equity is a growing concern in public health, and it’s a theme that ESCAIDE is putting front and centre. Poor indoor air quality disproportionately affects vulnerable populations — children, the elderly, people with respiratory conditions, and those working in poorly ventilated buildings. Airmid’s work contributes to leveling the playing field by enabling interventions that reduce exposures to harmful indoor pollutants, allergens, and pathogens.
How Airmid Is Supporting the Broader ESCAIDE Mission
- Research & Innovation: Our in-house laboratory and environmental chambers allow us to test a wide range of products (air purifiers, ventilation systems, surface cleaners) under controlled conditions to assess their efficacy in reducing microbial and chemical risks.
- Industry Collaboration: We work with global manufacturers (e.g., Dyson, Alstom) to validate and improve air-cleaning technologies — bridging the gap between scientific evidence and practical deployment.
- Public Health Advocacy: By generating robust, third-party-verified data, we support the development of healthier building standards and public health policy around indoor air quality.
- Capacity Building: Just as ESCAIDE helps cultivate the next generation of public health leaders, Airmid helps train and support both private sector and public health actors in understanding and managing bioaerosol risk in indoor spaces.
Looking Ahead: A Shared Vision for Improved Indoor Air Quality
As ESCAIDE continues to shape the future of infectious disease epidemiology, Airmid Healthgroup is committed to being part of that conversation — especially when it comes to the invisible drivers of disease in the indoor environment. We believe that improving indoor air quality is not just a matter of comfort; it’s a public health imperative.
By aligning our work with the themes at ESCAIDE — One Health, evidence translation, equity, preparedness — we aim to contribute meaningfully to a safer, healthier indoor world. We look forward to future opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation in the service of public health.
