Following his recent visit to Airmid Healthgroup and tour of the bioaerosol research facility we are delighted to welcome Dr. David O’Connor, Assistant Professor in the School of Chemical Sciences at Dublin City University (DCU), to contribute thought leadership articles to the airmid healthgroup blog.
Dr. O’Connor has a wealth of expertise in bioaerosol research and atmospheric chemistry, making him a true though leaders is this specialist area of research..
At DCU, Dr. O’Connor is actively involved in undergraduate lecturing and laboratory demonstrations in physical chemistry. His research interests are centered on:
- Developing an Irish bioaerosol monitoring network and forecast.
- Investigating interactions between gaseous and aerosol phases in the atmosphere.
- Characterizing biological and chemical aerosols and determining their sources.
- Studying the atmospheric degradation of fungal and bacterial volatile organic compounds.
One of his notable projects, the BOHEMIAN project, aims to produce the first Ireland-specific forecast model for allergy-related bioaerosols using real-time devices, artificial neural networks, and machine learning algorithms. This initiative seeks to help individuals understand and mitigate the impact of bioaerosols on their health.
Dr. O’Connor has also been instrumental in developing a new independent pollen forecast, allowing allergy sufferers to manage their conditions more effectively by taking preventive measures based on real-time data.
His extensive background includes previous positions at Technological University Dublin and post-doctoral roles at the University of Denver (where he worked with the distinguished Dr Hernandez) and University College Cork, where he conducted numerous field and laboratory studies on atmospherically relevant species and processes.
