Inside Airmid’s State-of-the-Art Aerobiology Test Chambers

Aerobiology Test Chambers

Written by Oliver Dsa, MSc, senior virologist at Airmid Healthgroup where he leads testing and research on airborne pathogens, indoor air quality, and antiviral technologies in real-world environments. In this blog, he discusses the aerobiology test chambers.

Airmid’s state-of-the-art environmental test chambers support ASTM and AHAM compliant product and indoor air quality testing

Aerobiology Test Chambers

At Airmid Healthgroup, our commitment to scientific excellence is reflected in every part of our facility, especially in our ten advanced environmental test chambers. Built to meet the highest international standards, these chambers play a central role in delivering world-class product testing, research, and certification services.

As an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory, we provide trusted data to manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and innovators looking to validate the safety, performance, and air quality impact of their products.

Precision-Engineered to Meet Global Standards

Our environmental chambers are fully compliant with specifications from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). With internal volumes ranging from 3 m³ to 30 m³, the chambers are engineered for a wide variety of testing needs—from small appliances to full-scale HVAC components.

Each chamber features:

  • HEPA-filtered supply air
  • Temperature control: 15°C to 30°C
  • Humidity control: 30% to 90% RH
  • Stainless steel construction with low-VOC compliant materials

Aerobiology Test Chambers Designed for Control, Containment, and Cleanliness

To ensure a sterile and highly controlled testing environment, the chambers incorporate:

  • Sealable design with interlocked anteroom doors, meeting cleanroom standards
  • Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems
  • The ability to operate at 0.05 air changes per hour (ACH) for containment testing
  • Rapid purge capacity up to 20 ACH for efficient air exchange
  • Vinyl-sealed flooring and interiors designed for deep-clean sterilisation

Flexible Contaminant Introduction and Distribution

Whether testing for allergens, bacteria, viruses, mould, or product emissions, controlled contaminant introduction is critical. Our chambers allow:

  • Introduction of contaminants through wall ports or an internal dispersal system
  • Uniform mixing using built-in mixing and recirculation fans
  • Real-time air sampling using impingers, impactors, or glass fiber filters
  • Particle monitoring via Optical Particle Counters (OPC) and Condensation Particle Counters (CPC) for both micro and nanoparticles

Aerobiology Test Chambers for a Wide Range of Products and Systems

  • Air cleaners
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Air conditioners
  • Air quality monitors
  • HVAC filters
  • Flooring and paints

All testing is conducted to relevant ASTM, AHAM, or IEC standards, ensuring results are globally recognised and actionable.

Simulating Real-World Conditions

Product performance often depends on real-world environmental conditions. Our chambers support:

  • Remote operation of devices during testing
  • HVAC ducting to interlink chambers, allowing simulation of air movement between connected spaces
  • ASHRAE 52.2 duct integration to evaluate HVAC filtration effectiveness
  • A bespoke recirculation loop that mimics airflow patterns in transport vehicles, supporting a wide range of airflow rates for realistic simulation

Why It Matters

Indoor air quality is increasingly under the spotlight—from health-conscious consumers to evolving global regulations. At Airmid Healthgroup Ltd, our test chambers provide the scientific rigour and real-world simulation needed to develop safer, more effective products for homes, workplaces, and transportation systems.
