Dr. James McGrath Visits Airmid’s Aerosol Testing Labs

Airmid Healthgroup welcomed Dr. James McGrath to our aerosol testing labs for discussions on advancing indoor air quality (IAQ) research, standards, and innovation through collaborative efforts

Airmid healthgroup was honored to recently host Dr. James McGrath from Maynooth University at our aerosol testing laboratories, where discussions centered on his leading-edge research and the future of indoor air quality (IAQ) testing, standards and innovation.

As a prominent researcher in the areas of indoor aerosol dynamics, air quality, and building ventilation, Dr. McGrath holds influential roles as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Ventilation and a board member of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ) and the Irish Representative on the Board of the Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre (AIVC). His leadership in these organizations reflects his dedication to driving international progress in IAQ research.

Dr. McGrath’s Groundbreaking Research on IAQ

At Maynooth University, Dr. McGrath’s research is focused on exploring how indoor air pollutants, ventilation, and building design impact human health. He uses both experimental and computational methods to study the spread of aerosols and air pollutants in indoor spaces, shedding light on their effects on occupant exposure. His expertise aligns closely with airmid healthgroup’s work, where advanced testing capabilities support research on how various building materials, products, and ventilation strategies influence IAQ. During his visit, Dr. McGrath toured airmid healthgroup’s specialized labs, fostering discussions around collaborative projects that could further push the boundaries of indoor air quality science.

Prior to joining Maynooth, Dr. McGrath’s research career was rooted in the Centre for Climate and Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS) at the University of Galway, where his PhD research explored computational models for indoor air pollution exposure assessment. His early research, alongside esteemed air pollution expert Dr. Miriam Byrne, focused on pollutant distribution in residential environments.

He is leading several ongoing projects funded by EPA and SEAI, which provide evidence-based insights to inform policy decisions related to building design, energy efficiency standards, and the practical implementation of energy retrofit strategies.

Collaborative Opportunities

Dr. McGrath’s visit to Airmid highlighted the shared goals between academia and industry. Both parties aim to enhance IAQ knowledge and create healthier indoor spaces, particularly as building ventilation and IAQ standards continue to evolve. The conversation continued from the recent excellent Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre (AIVC) conference in Dublin which Dr McGrath helped organise. This gathering of international experts showcased the shared commitment to advancing best practices and innovation in indoor air quality.

Looking ahead, Airmid is excited about the potential for collaboration with Dr. McGrath and Maynooth University, leveraging the combined expertise to drive research that supports healthier, more sustainable indoor environments. Keep an eye on this space for future updates as we work together to champion air quality advancements that benefit people and communities worldwide!
