Pillow Hygiene: What Ireland’s Dirtiest Pillow Taught Us About Allergens and Bacteria

by Angela Southey PhD, MPH

Why Pillow Hygiene Matters for Health and Indoor Air Quality

A yellowed, stained pillow tested by Airmid Healthgroup during the Pillow Check-Up campaign, revealing high levels of dust mite allergens, bacteria, and mould — highlighting the importance of pillow hygiene.
Irelands Dirtiest Pillow contained high levels of dust mite allergen bacteria and mould emphasising why pillow hygiene is vital for healthier sleep

In 2013, Airmid Healthgroup partnered with Gabriel Scientific to launch the Pillow Check-Up on RTÉ Radio 1’s The Mooney Show. The nationwide campaign invited listeners to send in their pillows for scientific analysis — revealing just how much bacteria, mould, and allergens can accumulate where we rest our heads.

The results were eye-opening:

  • One-third of pillows tested contained dust mite allergen.

  • All pillows harboured bacteria, with nearly one-third containing high levels.

  • Half showed detectable mould contamination.

Laboratory testing identified microorganisms such as Candida, Aspergillus, Rhodotorula, and Streptococcus.

Pillows are in direct contact with our faces for hours each night, making them a potential reservoir for allergens and pathogens. Dust mites, mould spores, and bacteria can trigger asthma, allergic rhinitis, and other respiratory issues.

As pillows age, their filling materials can also trap moisture, creating an environment where microbes thrive. Some of the pillows sent in were decades old — one even 70 years — highlighting how infrequently some bedding is replaced.

If you’re concerned about what might be lurking in your bedding, Airmid offers allergen testing services to help assess and improve your indoor environment.

Testing the SleepAngel™ Pillow: A Scientific Approach to Pillow Hygiene

As part of the initiative, participants received a new SleepAngel™ pillow, an innovative design by Gabriel Scientific that won “Innovation of the Year” at the 2012 Irish Times InterTradeIreland Innovation Awards.

Airmid Healthgroup scientists tested the SleepAngel™ pillow for its ability to block allergens, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The patented filter technology allowed airflow but prevented microorganisms from passing through. The results showed the pillow to be a 100% effective barrier to all tested particles, including those known to cause allergic sensitisation.

Ireland’s Dirtiest Pillow: The Results

The campaign concluded with the announcement of “Ireland’s Dirtiest Pillow” on The Mooney Show. The winning entry — a 34-year-old pillow — contained:

  • High levels of Der p 1 (house dust mite allergen)

  • Bacteria including S. aureus, S. epidermidis, E. coli, and Bacillus species

This real-world testing demonstrated the importance of regular pillow replacement and maintaining good pillow hygiene to support healthier sleep environments.
