Science-Backed Testing Confirms Dyson’s Air Multiplier™ Humidifier Minimizes Allergen and Microbial Risk

Dyson has launched a humidifier that brings together innovative engineering and scientific validation to support better indoor air quality. The Dyson AM10, which uses Air Multiplier™ technology for even air distribution and a UV-C light to eliminate 99.9% of bacteria in water, was recently introduced to the UK market. But before it reached consumers, this advanced humidifier underwent rigorous independent testing at Airmid Healthgroup’s climate-controlled environmental test chambers.
Why Humidifier Testing Matters for Health
Humidifiers are commonly used to alleviate dry indoor conditions, especially during colder months. However, concerns have been raised over their potential to introduce harmful microorganisms into indoor air when not properly designed or maintained. That’s where scientific testing becomes crucial.
At Airmid Healthgroup, our studies focused on evaluating the Dyson humidifier’s impact on airborne bacteria, fungi, and allergens. Our controlled environment allowed us to simulate real-world conditions while introducing pre-determined levels of contaminants. The goal: to assess whether operation of the humidifier could inadvertently increase health risks through microbial aerosolization.
Test Results: No Significant Aerosolisation, Consistent Humidity Control
Our team’s research revealed several important findings:
-
Effective microbial inactivation: The Dyson humidifier’s UV-C sterilization system successfully reduced the viability of bacteria and fungi in the water reservoir.
-
Stable humidity levels: The product maintained a consistent humidity within a tightly controlled target range throughout operation.
-
No significant aerosolization: Critically, testing demonstrated that the humidifier did not contribute to re-aerosolisation of microbes, even when water was deliberately contaminated. Air sampling showed no increase in exposure to bacteria, fungi, or allergens during use.
These results highlight the product’s ability to provide hydrated indoor air without compromising air hygiene, a vital consideration for individuals with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory sensitivities.
Certified to the Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Standard
Following the completion of testing, the Dyson humidifier became the first product to meet the Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification Standard for Humidifiers (ASP18:01/101). This standard was developed by Allergy Standards Ltd (ASL) in partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and is recognized internationally.
To earn this certification, a product must meet strict scientific criteria related to allergen control, chemical emissions, and performance under normal use conditions. Airmid Healthgroup serves as one of the independent testing laboratories supporting this program.
Innovation Backed by Science
The Dyson AM10 humidifier exemplifies how consumer technology can be both innovative and evidence-based. With concerns around indoor air quality becoming more mainstream, particularly in relation to respiratory health, products that undergo independent testing and third-party certification stand out in a crowded marketplace.
