Stanley Steemer begin roll out of the first Certified professional carpet cleaning service
Stanley Steemer, the largest deep cleaning service provider in the US, recently began the roll out of their professional carpet cleaning service which was the first to receive asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification from the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). The distinctive Stanley Steemer vans, each of which is custom fitted at their factory with their proprietary cleaning equipment, now also display the asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Mark. The Certification follows extensive research and testing by airmid healthgroup, which found that the Stanley Steemer service can have a significant beneficial impact on the maintenance of healthy indoor spaces.
airmid healthgroup studied the impact of the Stanley Steemer carpet cleaning service in a cross section of US homes. The study measured allergen and microorganism levels in the air and on carpet surfaces before and after steam cleaning was carried out. The results showed that the Stanley Steemer deep cleaning process removed up to 97% of surface allergens and led to a 67% reduction in airborne cat allergen. In addition there was a 90% reduction of bacteria on carpet surfaces and airborne mold levels were reduced by 55%.
After the field study was complete, cleaned and uncleaned carpet samples were transported to airmid healthgroup’s environmental test chambers for further analysis. Carpet layers were examined using scanning electron microscopy and were analysed for allergen content by ELISA.
The results of the study were presented by airmid healthgroup at the 2013 AAAAI Annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, which was attended by more than 7,700 allergist/immunologists, physicians and industry representatives.
Further field studies examined whether the steam cleaning process left excessive moisture in the cleaned carpet, which could lead to increased levels of relative humidity and increased mold growth. Moisture levels and the relative humidity in the cleaned area were found to return to baseline levels within 24 hours. The resurgence of allergen levels was also monitored in order to determine a care code outlining the recommended frequencies for both regular vacuuming and professional cleaning.
As a result of the research carried out by airmid healthgroup, a new asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Standard, ASP 16:01, for Professional Steam Cleaning was submitted to AAFA and adopted following review by an external panel of experts. The standard addresses the impact of the steam cleaning service on allergen levels in the carpet and airborne allergen levels as a result of room disturbance, as well the effect on relative humidity in the air and moisture levels in the carpet. Certification is subject to audit to ensure that the high quality control standards governing the provision and standardization of the service are maintained on an ongoing basis.
Two carpet cleaning chemicals used in association with the professional steam cleaning procedure, the Stanley Steemer G-900 and Professional Carpet and Upholstery Spotter, have also been Certified under Certification Standard ASP: 09-06, Cleaning Products used in Professional Carpet Steam Cleaning. All available toxicological data for the individual constituents of the products were assessed for their allergenic/sensitizing potential and general health effects. Small chamber analysis of the indoor air concentrations of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) showed that the levels emitted did not exceed Certification thresholds after 1 hour and 24 hours.
