Test method for antibacterial activity of photocatalytic materials under indoor lighting

The ISO 17094:2014 standard outlines a test method to determine the antibacterial activity of materials containing an indoor-light-active photocatalyst, or with indoor-light-active photocatalytic films on the surface, by measuring the survival of bacteria on the test surface after illumination with indoor light. ISO 17094:2014 applies to the testing of ceramics and other non-porous materials.

Test Description

  • Bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) are inoculated onto the test and control materials. Other bacteria strains can also be used if required.
  • The samples are exposed to indoor light for a set duration, after which viable bacteria are extracted from the test and control materials and enumerated.
  • The antibacterial activity of the photocatalyst after indoor light illumination is calculated according to criteria in the standard.
  • The antibacterial effect is also assessed in the dark and incorporated into the calculations.


Sample submission
We will provide you with a quote based on the number of samples and number of bacteria strains you wish to test. Flat, square (50 mm x 50 mm) samples no more than 10 mm thick are preferred, but other sizes and shapes may be used.

Turnaround Time
We aim to report your results within 4 weeks of receiving samples.

Third Party Validation
On passing this test, the product can be labelled as having been tested by airmid healthgroup to BS ISO 22196:2011 in support of any claim relating to the test and data received.
