Research Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day Medal to distinguished figures in healthcare underscores the nation’s commitment to excellence in Medtech and Digital Health disciplines
Ireland has firmly established itself as a global leader in medical technology (#medtech) innovation, boasting a vibrant ecosystem that fosters groundbreaking advancements in healthcare.
The Irish medtech sector is a testament to the country’s dedication to innovation and quality. Employing approximately 42,000 professionals, Ireland is home to over 450 medtech companies. Notably, nine of the world’s top ten medtech companies have operations in Ireland, highlighting its status as a premier hub for medical technology.
The country’s focus on research and development (R&D) has been pivotal in driving this success. Irish R&D activities encompass a wide array of cutting-edge fields, from biodegradable implants and 3D-printed medical devices to revolutionary cancer treatments and advanced diagnostic tools.
Strengthening Ties with the National Science Foundation
Ireland’s prominence in medical technology (medtech) innovation is further underscored by its robust international collaborations, particularly with esteemed organizations like the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). These partnerships not only enhance research capabilities but also solidify Ireland’s position at the forefront of global healthcare advancements.
In a significant development, Research Ireland and the NSF have entered into a new five-year bilateral partnership aimed at fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. This collaboration seeks to enhance transatlantic engagement between academia and industry, facilitating joint research initiatives and training programs. The agreement was formalized in Washington, D.C., with Dr. Ciarán Seoighe, Deputy CEO of Research Ireland, and Dr. Sethuraman ‘Panch’ Panchanathan, Director of the NSF, signing the partnership.

Dr. Panchanathan’s presence in Ireland during the signing ceremony highlights the mutual commitment to strengthening research and enterprise opportunities across both nations. He emphasized that the partnership aims to promote knowledge transfer and innovation across various priority sectors, reflecting a shared vision for advancing scientific and technological frontiers.
InterTrade Ireland and Ulster university also critical to the ecosystem
Intertrade Ireland had also earlier in the week held a networking event at the Washington DC economic partnership building. We were welcomed by Derek Ford President and CEO of the Washington DC Economic Partnership and the Intertrade Ireland CEO Margaret Hearty.

Alison Currie, Intertrade Ireland director of innovation and entrepreneurship presided over a panel discussion which included Dr Ciaran Seoige, Deputy CEO of Research Ireland, Professor Mark Lawler professor of digital health at Queens University and Professor William Gallagher Co-Lead of the all Island Cancer research Institute.
One thing the panel highlighted was the well-established tripartite agreement between The United States, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland who for many years now have formed a unique partnership as a way of increasing the level of collaborative R&D among researchers across the jurisdictions. The agencies involved in this effort are: the National Science Foundation (U.S.), Science Research Ireland (Republic), and Invest NI (N. Ireland) The objective is to encourage the development and submission of transnational and collaborative research projects that address the exciting research challenges in MedTech and Lifesciences. This agreement was extended at the Research Ireland medal cermoney.
