How the BS EN 13704 Test Works

- Contact Exposure: The spore suspension is added to a prepared sample of the product under test diluted in hard water. The mixture is maintained at 20°C ±1°C for 60 minutes ±10 seconds.
- Neutralisation: At the end of the contact time, a portion is taken and the sporicidal action in this portion is immediately neutralised or suppressed by a validated method — stopping any further disinfectant activity.
- Enumeration: The number of surviving bacterial spores in each sample are determined by serial dilution and plating on appropriate agar, with colony counts performed after incubation.
- Reduction Calculation: The reduction in viable spore counts is calculated and expressed as a log₁₀ reduction compared to the untreated control.
