Determination of antibacterial activity of textile products

The ISO 20743:2021 standard outlines a test method to determine the antibacterial activity of textile products incorporating an antibacterial finish to prevent or mitigate the growth of bacteria. ISO 20743:2021 applies to the testing of cloth, material for clothing, bedding, home furnishings etc., and nonwovens.

Test Description

  • Bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus or Klebsiella pneumoniae) are inoculated onto treated (test) and untreated (control) fabric. Other bacteria can be requested.
  • The samples are incubated for a set duration (typically 18 to 24 hours), after which viable bacteria are extracted from the test and control fabrics and enumerated.
  • The antibacterial activity of the textile product is calculated according to the criteria in the standard.

Sample submission
We will provide you with a quote based on the number of samples and number of bacteria strains you wish to test.

Turnaround Time
We aim to report your results within 4 weeks of receiving samples.

Third Party Validation
On passing this test, the product can be labelled as having been tested by airmid healthgroup to BS EN ISO 20743:2021 (formerly BS EN ISO 20743:2013) in support of any claim relating to the test and data received

The quality of the third party data we received from airmid healthgroup helped us showcase our innovative strategy of licensing this novel technology at a prestigious international scientific event, the European Innovation Convention. Ultimately this will allow us add value and differentiate our customer offerings through a focus on health and indoor air quality.
