Asthma Allergy Awareness MonthMay is a busy time in the asthma and allergy world. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) designates May as Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month. The month starts off with World Asthma Day (May 3rd) and Air Quality Awareness Week (May 2nd to May 6th).

We updated this blog post throughout the month to keep track of some of the events held to raise awareness of asthma, allergies and air quality.

On May 3rd The CDC Asthma Program and EPALive held their annual twitter chat to mark World Asthma Day. We compiled a Storify of the topics that were discussed:

The next day, May 4th, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) joined with pediatric allergy & asthma specialists for another twitter chat, this time focusing on answering questions about asthma in children. Here is a summary:

On May 5th, as part of Air Quality Awareness Week, the CDC and EPALive held a twitter chat about air quality and its effect on human health. We compiled a summary of the chat:

Fighting for BreathOn May 6th and 7th the Asthma Society of Canada held the Fighting for Breath 2016 conference. This was their third annual conference held to mark World Asthma Day, following on from the Clearing the Air conference in 2015 and the For Life and Breath summit in 2014. The theme of Fighting for Breath was “Severe Asthma in Canada”. Although this more acute and lethal form of asthma affects up to a quarter of a million Canadians, it is not generally well understood. The conference talks addressed several aspects of severe asthma including its diagnosis, treatment and associated costs. We were particularly interested in Dr Harold Kim’s talk on the Role of Allergy and Environmental Management in Treatment of Severe Asthma. Dr Kim gave advice on dust mite avoidance and reaffirmed that hypoallergenic cats and dogs are a myth. Videos of the talks are available on the conference website and on the Asthma Society of Canada’s facebook page. For more details from the conference, check out the #Fight4Breath hashtag on twitter.

May has been a very busy time for the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Throughout the month they have been running their Tackle Asthma campaign to provide reliable information on recognising, managing and living with asthma. As part of the campaign AAFA hosted a #TackleAsthma Twitter chat (read the transcript here) on May 5th and released a “playbook” of tips about exercising when you have asthma. You can download the playbook here (PDF 6.6 MB). On May 18th AAFA partnered with the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) to hold another Twitter chat (read the transcript here), this time the topic was #Ready4Asthma.

10th anniversary asthma allergy friendlyOn May 24th AAFA celebrated the 10th anniversary of the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program with a reception in the Embassy of Ireland in Washington D.C. In attendance were representatives from leading companies participating in the program including Dyson Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Hollander Sleep Products, Stanley Steemer, Benjamin Moore & Co., TarkettBona U.S. and Fellowes, Inc. As a designated testing laboratory for the asthma & allergy friendly® program airmid healthgroup has been central in the testing of these companies’ products and services.

As the month draws to a close we would like to thank all of the organizations mentioned above for the work they did to distribute accurate and helpful information to raise awareness of asthma and allergies. Of course, for those who live with the conditions, asthma and allergy awareness doesn’t end on May 30th. We will continue to focus on these issues, especially as we move into June, which is Healthy Homes Month.
