2016 American Academy of Allergy Asthma Immunology ConferenceEarlier this month some of our team travelled to LA to present our latest bed bug research at the 2016 AAAAI Conference. The conference is the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. We were delighted to continue the tradition of presenting at this prestigious gathering of experts. This year the conference was held in the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The day of our poster presentation opened with a fascinating plenary from Thomas Platts-Mills on the history and discovery of Immunoglobulin E (IgE). IgE was independently discovered by two research teams in 1966/1967. During an allergic response your immune system overreacts to allergens (for example house dust mite or cat allergens) by producing IgE. The discovery of IgE “gave clinical allergy a scientific backbone”.

We were delighted to be part of the Exposures, Asthma and Allergic Diseases poster session and alongside the Indoor Allergens and Fungi poster session. There were some interesting posters presenting insights into house dust mite allergen levels in US homes, home aeroallegen sampling and the level of fungal burden in the homes of patients referred by a physician for an environmental assessment.

The AAAAI conference has always embraced the power of social media to spread its message. Those of us who remained at home in Dublin were able to follow the latest developments through the AAAAI16 hashtag. We are already looking forward to AAAAI17!
